Pilgrim’s Way

I have no idea why, but for years and years I thought Pilgrim’s Way was located somewhere out in Carmel Valley – so when I saw the sign a couple of weeks ago on my way back from the post office, I knew I wanted to make this a stop on my walkabout. I’ve known of this place for quite some time so I was curious to go inside and check it out. I was expecting the store to have an over-the-top New Age vibe, instead I was surprised to see all the mainstream popular and current books for sale on the shelves along with bookstore type gifts and knick-knacks.

I always thought Pilgrim’s Way was a meeting place for the metaphysical enthusiasts where one could go for a tarot reading, find out about numerology, meet with a clairvoyant, have discussions about auras, learn about astrology, etc. While this is still all possible, the business has evolved and now holds the esteem as the only remaining bookstore in Carmel-By-The-Sea.

In addition to the nice (albeit small) selection of books, per their website, “the store has become a thriving center of the community and features one of the last community bulletin boards. The store also has a focus on supporting historic Carmel. Through its sponsorship of local education, and its appreciation & support of local historic organizations, this is the perfect stop to educate, empower, inspire and enliven oneself while finding a special reminder of this seaside village.”

Apparently there is also a ‘Secret Garden’ at this location, unfortunately I forgot about this and didn’t ask about it or look for it when I was there. Looks like I will be heading back at some point to check out the hidden oasis and find out more about the plants and fountains that are in the garden.
