Figge Cellers and Winfield Gallery

We poured Figge wine at an event we hosted a couple of weeks ago and we needed to reconcile our account…so instead of paying over the phone, I decided to walk on over and check them out in person. Figge Cellers is a boutique winery producing Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah wines from various vineyards in Monterey. The tasting room is located in the Winfield Gallery on Dolores Street between Ocean and 7th.  It’s where the palette meets the palate…gotta love the play on words.  Not only is it fun to have a tasting room inside a gallery but both the wine and the gallery are equally fantastic.

After sampling the wine at our event, I was a fan before I even entered the tasting room. My timing must have been spot-on because the first person I met when I walked in the door was Peter Figge. It didn’t take long to see that Peter knows what he’s doing and is passionate about wine. Peter even extended an invitation to me for their upcoming new release party. Nice guy!

This bonus on this walkabout was two locations in one.

Since my goal is to explore more and really take in my surroundings there was no way I was going to miss the opportunity to check out the Winfield Gallery. Actually, no twisting my arm necessary. The gallery is currently showing an Ethan Russell exhibition. I was pretty much transfixed by Ethan’s photos the moment I walked in the door. Peter Figge told me that Ethan grew up in California and headed over to England in the late 1960s to be a writer and photographer. Obviously the stars aligned and Ethan was in the right place at the right time. Somehow Ethan connected himself to some amazing musicians and his photography career was launched. This is an absolutely mesmerizing collection: Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Who, Jim Morrison, Eric Clapton, and the list goes on. There is something about black and white photos that I find practically hypnotizing and I was blown away at how thin and tiny these larger than life rockers appear in the photos. I believe the exhibition runs for the entire month of December – If you love classic rock and wine, this is the perfect stop!
